Pétanque Player Dies After Metal Boule Hit in Mimizan
A 68‑year‑old pétanque player was killed when he was struck in the head by a metal boule during a dispute between rival teams in the French Atlantic resort of Mimizan on 17 June.
The clash began after the beach‑team asked to play in town for shade during a heatwave, sparking a confrontation with a town‑based group.
An 81‑year‑old man was arrested and is being held in custody at the Mont‑de‑Marsan prosecutor’s office.
Prosecutor Alexa Dubourg said: “According to the evidence … it seems that it is the 81‑year‑old man who struck the victim, who is deceased, with a pétanque boule.” The incident was described as “an argument which degenerated into a physical confrontation.”
Investigations continue to determine the exact roles of each person present at the boulodrome on 17 June.
The victim did not die immediately; local radio said he collapsed minutes later after suffering a heart attack.
Pétanque is a French game that involves rolling hollow steel balls toward a small wooden ball; rival teams playing on the beach and in town can sometimes lead to heated disputes.
One local resident told AFP news agency that while the rivalry is intense, it was not expected to reach violent levels.
