Israel Captures Senior Hamas Officer Amid Bombardments That Killed Three in Gaza

Israel’s Defence Minister Itamar Katz announced that a senior Hamas terrorist had been captured during a night raid in Gaza City, a claim that came after reports of Israeli air strikes that killed two children and a woman.

Katz said the operation involved Israeli special forces and an Israel‑backed Palestinian militia, but he did not specify which group had detained the Hamas official. He added that the Israeli military intends to “thwart” and “destroy” Hamas terror infrastructure before gaps in security appear.

According to local medics, the strike that killed the children and woman was part of a broader aerial campaign that Israel claims targets threats to its forces. A separate incident in central Gaza took a third child’s life, illustrating the civilian toll in addition to the combat operations.

Palestinian accounts describe heavy bombardment in western Gaza’s densely inhabited neighborhoods, with footage showing vehicles turned to wreckage and sounds of gunfire echoing across streets. A Palestinian security source identified the target of the raid as a senior official in Hamas’s internal security service, while a spokesperson for Gaza’s Hamas‑run media office stated that the Israeli unit’s mission was exposed and faced casualties.

The ongoing conflict, launched by a Hamas‑led assault on southern Israel on 7 October 2023, has already claimed over 73,000 lives in Gaza, figures that the United Nations considers reliable. The conflict remains a flashpoint for regional stability and international humanitarian concerns, as civilian areas continue to experience the most acute impacts of hostilities.
