SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Investigators are examining a shooting that erupted outside a church in Salt Lake City during a funeral, leaving two individuals dead and six others injured. The incident, which took place on Wednesday, is believed to have stemmed from a dispute among attendees who were familiar with one another. No arrests have been made as police continue to investigate possible gang affiliations and the reluctance of witnesses to come forward.
Five of the injured remained hospitalized as of Thursday morning, with at least three reportedly in critical condition. Salt Lake City Police Chief Brian Redd emphasized the department's focus on uncovering the motivations behind the gunfire, clarifying that authorities do not consider the shooting to be random or a targeted attack against the church community.
The church serves a predominantly Tongan congregation and offers services in their native language. Given the setting, local residents were naturally outraged and distressed by the incident occurring at a place of worship dedicated to honoring life.
Brennan McIntire, a nearby resident, recounted hearing several loud gunshots and rushing outside to assist. He described a chaotic scene with bystanders tending to the wounded and first responders arriving promptly. His wife, Kenna, expressed her shock at witnessing such violence in their vicinity, stating, 'It was really heartbreaking to hear and see.'
Over 100 law enforcement vehicles converged on the area following the incident, with officers reviewing surveillance footage and license plate data to identify suspects. Mayor Erin Mendenhall condemned the shooting, asserting that such an event should not occur outside a place meant for communal gatherings and celebrations of life.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which owns the facility, expressed gratitude for the quick response by first responders and extended prayers for those affected by the tragedy. Following the shooting, local congregations are on heightened alert, reflecting broader concerns regarding violence against places of worship following recent incidents elsewhere.
