In brief

After years spent under the oppressive rule of President Bashar al-Assad, Syrians in the capital are celebrating newfound freedoms, gathering at once-restricted locations for picnics and open trade.

In Damascus, a vibrant revival is unfolding as residents reclaim spaces that were long off-limits during the regime of Bashar al-Assad. Mount Qasioun, a picturesque spot overlooking the city, has become a hub for families and friends to gather and enjoy their favorite pastimes. For Sumaya Ainaya, a local resident, the memories of spending weekends on the mountain with her family are now rekindled. She recalls the years before the Syrian civil war erupted in 2011, when she and others socialized freely there. However, the onset of the war led to the military's closure of the area, transforming it from a recreational site to a strategic position for military operations against rebels. This New Year’s Eve, Ainaya and her family returned to Mount Qasioun, armed with snacks and warmth against the winter chill. “Thank God, we’ve returned now — we feel like we can breathe again,” she said, delighted to traverse the once-forbidden landscape. Her son, Muhammad Qatafani, echoed her sentiments, stating, “We feel like the city has returned to us.”The atmosphere across Damascus is charged with a sense of liberation. Previously enforced restrictions stifled speech, movement, and public gatherings, leaving the citizens feeling detached from their city. Now, they are reclaiming parks, cafés, and social gatherings that once felt foreign or dangerous. As ordinary Syrians reclaim their public spaces and freedoms, a sense of hope pervades the air. The collective joy of reconnecting with their city, coupled with a renewed sense of ownership, signals the beginning of a vibrant chapter for those who had long awaited such moments of normalcy.
