In brief

Rescue teams are racing against time to find survivors after an earthquake claimed the lives of more than 2,700 people across Myanmar, with the Sky Villa Condominium in Mandalay suffering major destruction.

The catastrophic earthquake that struck Myanmar on Friday has sent shockwaves across the nation and beyond, leaving a trail of devastation in its wake. Among the hardest-hit locations is the Sky Villa Condominium in Mandalay, which crashed down, trapping residents and representing a stark loss amid the country’s rapid urbanization. As communities reel from this tragedy, the Sky Villa Condominium—once a proud symbol of modern development—has become a grave site. Rescuers have been laboring intensely, sifting through the debris of the building, which collapsed during the quake that has left at least 2,719 individuals dead. The 12-story building, claiming to have an “earthquake-resistant foundation,” also featured luxurious amenities, including the largest rooftop bar in Mandalay and state-of-the-art fitness facilities. However, these qualities proved inadequate against the powerful tremors that shook the region.By Sunday, rescue operations were complicated by extreme heat and the unsettling odor of decay permeating the air as family members gathered at the wreckage seeking news of their loved ones. Sai Myo Tun, desperately searching for his sister and brother-in-law amidst the ruins, echoed the pleas of many: “Please speed up!” he implored the rescuers, fearing for the life of his pregnant sister, who had only moved into her apartment there last year.Despite international aid pouring in, including assistance from Chinese search-and-rescue teams, families continue to cling to hope as crews comb through the rubble. With many still unaccounted for, the urgent race to rescue potential survivors continues, embodying the resilience and anguish of a nation facing overwhelming sorrow in the wake of catastrophe.
