In brief

As corporate workers pivot to small businesses, couples like Nicole and David Rizzo find success in unassuming ventures like managing Die Cleaning Equipment, embracing the freedom of entrepreneurship while revitalizing niche markets.

In recent years, there has been a significant trend of younger professionals leaving traditional corporate roles to seek more fulfilling and profitable small business opportunities. Among these "corporate refugees" are Nicole and David Rizzo, who purchased Die Cleaning Equipment, a niche aluminum business based in Phoenix. The couple's journey began when Nicole stumbled upon a "For Sale" listing for the company run by a husband-and-wife team. Initially, David was confused by the name, suspecting it might involve janitorial work, but they quickly learned that the business specialized in cleaning equipment used to manufacture aluminum products. This company was a haven for welders, producing machines that service aluminum extruders that serve various industries ranging from automotive parts to medical equipment. The previous owners, Steve and Kristin Smith, built their business from scratch, but after years of hard work, they hoped to retire and explore the country in an Airstream trailer. The Rizzos, both with limited backgrounds in the aluminum sector, saw the potential in the business during an enlightening visit to the Smiths' workshop.“Upon seeing the machines, I realized this was the coolest thing I had ever encountered,” remarked Ms. Rizzo. Subsequently, in June 2021, the Rizzos purchased the business for approximately $600,000, with Nicole stepping into the CEO role. Fast forward almost four years, and the couple is proud to have not only recovered their investment but also included a new chapter to their professional lives. This phenomenon of younger individuals abandoning corporate stability for the often-unconventional world of small business represents a shift in the employment landscape, as people prioritize personal fulfillment and autonomy over traditional career paths.
