In brief

U.S. officials are intensifying diplomatic efforts with the Taliban to secure the release of American nationals held hostage in Afghanistan, including a potential prisoner swap.

According to sources familiar with the discussions, U.S. officials recently proposed a deal to the Taliban that could lead to the release of American detainees currently held in Afghanistan. While the specifics of the negotiations remain undisclosed, it's believed that the Biden administration is considering exchanging Muhammad Rahim, an Afghan detainee held at Guantánamo Bay since 2008, for the Americans. Muhammad Rahim has been identified by the U.S. as a senior Al Qaeda operative, although there are claims that his actual involvement may be less severe, describing him instead as a translator or courier who does not pose a significant threat if released. The Taliban has confirmed that they currently hold two Americans. One of these individuals, George Glezmann, an airline mechanic, was captured during a tour in December 2022. The second, Ryan Corbett, was seized while on a business trip in August 2022. However, the status of a potential third American, Mahmood Habibi, remains unclear. Habibi, a naturalized American, was allegedly taken captive after a U.S. drone strike in Afghanistan that targeted Ayman al-Zawahiri, the former leader of Al Qaeda.Habibi's family believes he, along with 30 others from the American Asia Consultancy Group, was arrested due to suspicions about the company's involvement in the drone strike. Officials are not commenting on whether he had any role in the incident, nor is any information about his wellbeing currently available. As the situation evolves, the focus remains on securing the safe return of American citizens from Taliban captivity.
