In brief

In a candid interview, Chuck Schumer addressed the turmoil within his party following his unexpected support of a Republican spending bill. The senator defended his choice as a strategic move to avoid severe government disruptions.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is grappling with one of the most significant uprisings from Democrats in recent memory after he backed a Republican federal spending bill last week. In an exclusive interview on The Interview, Schumer attempted to justify his decision amidst growing discontent among Democrats, stating he sees no need to resign despite the backlash. The senator expressed shock at the outrage from his party when he voted for the spending bill, arguing it was a choice between two undesirable options. He explained that his decision was pivotal in averting a government shutdown, which he attributed to the agendas of figures like former President Trump and entrepreneur Elon Musk. Schumer labeled Trump and Musk as “anti-government fanatics” and “nihilists,” claiming their intentions were to dismantle federal agencies, which would lead to dire consequences for essential services. He painted a bleak picture, emphasizing that a shutdown could eliminate crucial programs like food stamps and veterans services: “They could argue that food stamps for kids are not essential. It’s gone. Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid.” In what he dubbed a "very, very difficult" decision, Schumer stated, “The damage they can do under a shutdown is much worse than any other damage that they could do.” He is concerned that the repercussions of a prolonged shutdown would allow adversaries of the federal government to push for reductions in fundamental services for prolonged periods.Acknowledging tensions within the party, Schumer admitted that he hadn't communicated with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries since his vote, hinting at a potential rift between the two prominent Democratic leaders. He recognized there were “divisions” among Democrats but insisted on their shared goal of opposing Trump. Going forward, Schumer emphasized the importance of unity while facing political challenges, despite the current discord resonating through his party.
