In brief
In a significant move against rising extremism, German police have arrested five minors suspected of orchestrating violent acts as part of a neo-Nazi organization targeting asylum seeker accommodations across the country.
German authorities announced on Wednesday the arrest of five teenagers believed to be associated with a neo-Nazi group, the Last Wave of Defense, responsible for a series of arson attacks on buildings sheltering asylum seekers. The arrests come as Germany faces an alarming surge in politically motivated crimes, marking the highest levels observed in nearly twenty years. The suspects, all male and aged between 14 to 18, were apprehended during coordinated early-morning raids across three German states. Prosecutors disclosed that three of the suspects hold leadership roles within the organization, while additional members had already been detained. Under German privacy laws, the suspects were only identified by their first names.Charged with attempted murder and arson, the teenagers are set to enter pleas when their trial commences. Prosecutors indicated that the suspects exhibited a significant degree of responsibility despite their youth, raising concerns about the recruitment of minors into extremist ideologies. In a widespread effort involving over 220 officers, authorities conducted searches of 13 properties across four different provinces. The actions of the justice minister, Stefanie Hubig, highlight the seriousness of the situation, expressing alarm that all individuals involved were underage when they launched the violent organization. This incident serves as a warning that right-wing extremist terrorism is increasingly infiltrating younger demographics in Germany.
