In brief

Japan's ski resorts are experiencing unprecedented snowfall this winter, creating a mix of enthusiasm and difficulty for workers and visitors alike. The heavy snow has led to operational challenges and safety concerns, even as skiers revel in the deep powder.

Japan is renowned for its ski resorts, celebrated for their exceptional powder snow, but this winter, the country has been hit with record-breaking snowfall, complicating the experience for both resort workers and visitors. Reports indicate that some regions have accumulated more than a staggering 12 feet of snow this week, creating a winter wonderland for skiing but also sparking significant operational issues.Professional skier Tao Kreibich, known for his backcountry explorations, recently described the terrain as “super big and super gnarly,” highlighting its potential for adventure. However, the heavy snow has not come without its drawbacks. While many of Japan's approximately 500 ski areas are experiencing what appears to be a dream season, it is accompanied by challenges that could impact safety and profitability.Shinichi Imoto, a representative from Washigatake Ski Resort, shared that the abundance of snow presents a dual challenge: while it is a source of excitement, it also raises concerns for resort operations. "Heavy snow is both a joy and a worry," he stated, as the resort grapples with some of the largest snowdrifts experienced in the last decade. In response to the heavy accumulation, several resorts have been compelled to shut down ski lifts temporarily to allow staff to clear the massive snowdrifts. Furthermore, road closures have limited access, preventing many eager skiers from reaching the slopes. This season has also witnessed an uptick in incidents involving skiers lost in the backcountry and cases of individuals getting trapped in avalanches, stirring safety apprehensions among resort authorities. As visitors enjoy the seasonal thrill, the balancing act for ski resorts remains critical, navigating the fine line between the heights of an exhilarating ski season and the depths of operational and safety challenges that come with heavy snowfall.
