In brief

The fire, fueled by strong winds, is spreading closer to the city's central business district, raising concerns for local residents.

Firefighters are currently engaged in a major effort to suppress a wildfire that ignited on Table Mountain in Cape Town, significantly affecting the surrounding areas and causing growing alarm among residents. The blaze has been raging for several days in the Newlands section of the national park but expanded towards the heart of Cape Town overnight due to powerful winds, according to local officials.Edward Bosch, spokesperson for the Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service, characterized the fire as “extensive,” although the exact size and potential damage have yet to be confirmed. As of early Wednesday morning, officials indicated that there was no immediate threat to the downtown area; however, they cautioned that changing wind patterns could alter the situation rapidly. In response to the fire’s escalation, various hiking trails within Table Mountain National Park, a very popular destination for both locals and tourists, have been closed for safety reasons. The park management reported on Monday that approximately 148 acres had been consumed by the flames, emphasizing the risks posed to hikers who may still be present in the prohibited areas. A secondary fire in the Red Hill region was also noted to be active early on Wednesday. No evacuation orders have been issued at this time. Emergency services deployed two helicopters to assist in dropping water on the fire, with a third en route from Stellenbosch to help combat the flames. Firefighters from over 80 agencies have been mobilized to confront the spread of the wildfire, with hopes that conditions may be favorable for control efforts as the day progresses.Operations for a cable car that connects Table Mountain to the city center have been suspended due to smoke from the fire. Residents, particularly those living near the mountain's base, harbor concerns stemming from previous seasons of intense wildfires in the Western Cape. Ecologists have advocated for increased proactive measures, such as prescribed burns, urging park authorities to implement strategies to mitigate the emergence of uncontrollable wildfires in the future.
