In brief

Heavy monsoon rainfall over the past two days has overwhelmed Bangkok's drainage system, leading officials to declare the entire city a flood disaster zone. City workers are engaging in intensive pumping operations to push stormwater into navigable waters. Residents living near canals are told to secure belongings and stay on higher floors. Despite the influx of rain, forecasts still predict additional downpours over the weekend. BBC South East Asia Correspondent Jonathan Head reports from the scene.

Heavy monsoon rainfall has turned Bangkok into a low‑lying floodplain for days. Authorities have now declared the entire city a flood disaster zone, a designation that signals emergency response and legal provisions for assistance.

Water specialists are operating a network of pumps across the Metropolis, working to drain the continual onslaught of rainwater directly into the sea. The pumps string across the city’s canals, a historic network now working in reverse to evacuate the accumulated stormwater.

Neighbourhoods that are adjacent to the canal system have received urgent instructions from the city to move belongings to upper floors and to stay inside. Residents were told to avoid unnecessary travel, and the public transport system has temporarily halted at many stops.

Meteorological services indicate that additional heavy rain is still on the cards over the coming days, raising the likelihood of prolonged flooding and a slower drainage turnaround.

BBC South East Asia Correspondent Jonathan Head reports live from Bangkok, giving eyewitness accounts of the flooding and the city’s emergency measures. For updates, keep an eye on the live map and share sightings on social media using #BangkokFlood.
