In brief

Ricardo Prada Vásquez, a Venezuelan immigrant, has seemingly disappeared after being mistakenly deported from the U.S. to El Salvador. The case highlights the complexities and risks faced by immigrants within the U.S. immigration system.

In late January, Ricardo Prada Vásquez, a 32-year-old Venezuelan immigrant working a delivery job in Detroit, made a grave mistake when he inadvertently turned onto the Ambassador Bridge, leading to Canada. What was likely an innocent error became a life-changing incident when U.S. authorities detained Mr. Prada after he attempted to re-enter the United States. After being detained, he was ordered for deportation. On March 15, he informed a friend in Chicago that he and others were being held in a Texas detention facility, anticipating their return to Venezuela. However, that very night, three planes arranged by the Trump administration carried Venezuelan migrants to El Salvador. Since then, these migrants have been incarcerated in a high-security prison and have had no contact with the outside world.Shockingly, Mr. Prada has vanished entirely. He does not appear among the 238 deportees sent to El Salvador that day and has not been spotted in any documented footage of those who were repatriated. His friend, Javier, who last communicated with him, expressed deep concern, stating, "He has simply disappeared." Javier requested to remain anonymous, fearing repercussions from immigration authorities. This alarming situation raises critical questions regarding the treatment of immigrants and the protocols in place during deportations, particularly concerning the rights of individuals during such processes and ensuring their physical safety post-deportation.
