In brief

The family, on holiday in Bedar, Spain, survived the sudden wildfire that engulfed the village. Twelve people, including four Britons, have died, while 23 remain missing. Witnesses describe the terrifying scene and the loss of close friends amid the flames.

A British holiday‐makers’ family, Lucinda Curtois and partner Riyaz Cheytan with their teenage children, fled Bedar during a deadly Spanish wildfire that is now haunting the region.

The blaze cut off roads and threatened homes, forcing the family to walk through smoke‑laden streets to escape. "We were not expecting to hit a wall of fire," Curtois told us.

The pair later learned that close friends had lost their lives in the inferno. Official Spanish authorities report 12 fatalities in the village – four Britons among them – and 23 people still missing.

"They left their home on foot, I don't know why," Curtois added, suspecting that a blocked road forced the friends out of the countryside.

Eyewitness report: the flames rose visibly, saturating the landscape with black smoke and turning the sky an eerie orange hue. The family reached a safe spot just in time, but the emotional toll of losing friends remains heavy on their minds.
