In brief

After two failed lethal injection attempts, 50‑year‑old Christa Pike is still on a ventilator in a Nashville hospital. Her lawyer Stephen Ferrell says doctors are clearing the poison from her body and her prognosis is unclear. Tennessee officials have not decided whether to try again, while the governor suspended all executions for the year and the state’s prison chief has announced a resignation.

Christa Pike’s fate unclear after failed execution

The 50‑year‑old, convicted of killing Knoxville resident Colleen Slemmer in 1995, remains in a hospital in Nashville following two unsuccessful lethal‑injection attempts on Wednesday.

Stephen Ferrell, Pike’s legal counsel, told CNN that doctors are still working to flush the drug pentobarbital from her bloodstream. “She’s still on a ventilator, critically ill,” Ferrell said. He added that he has only received updates through a medical power of attorney and that he has not seen her personally.

The state has not yet announced whether a second execution will be attempted, and it has also not explained the technical failure that left Pike alive. Governor Bill Lee announced a suspension of all executions for the remainder of the year, and the head of the Tennessee Department of Correction has announced a resignation.

Ferrell urged the governor to move to at least commute Pike’s sentence to life in prison, arguing that the botched attempt was “torturous.” He also noted that Pike’s medical conditions, including a blood‑clotting disorder and narrow veins, may have increased the risk of suffering during a lethal injection.

If Pike recovers, questions remain about her mental competence and the legality of any future execution. The Tennessee Attorney General’s office has not yet indicated its next steps.

Pike was 18 at the time of the murder, and her execution remains one of the most controversial in the modern era of capital punishment in the United States.
