A drone struck a busy beach on the southern part of the Russian Black Sea coast, killing seven people—including three children—and injuring 40.
The incident, reported by the Governor of the Krasnodar region, Veniamin Kondratyev, was captured in social media footage verified by the BBC. A drone was seen accelerating toward a cliffside before crashing into a fireball on the shore, with tourists watching from the beach and the surrounding water.
The governor accused Ukraine of orchestrating a “deliberate strike on civilians.” Ukraine has not issued any comment, and both sides maintain that the drone was not targeting civilians directly. Witnesses quoted by Russian media noted that gunfire reportedly preceded the explosion, suggesting that Russian air‑defence forces might have fired at the drone.
The beach, located near Arkhipo‑Osipovka on the Black Sea, is a popular holiday spot for Russians, especially as international travel has been curtailed by sanctions. Residents of the adjacent village reported no warning sirens before the crash.
In the last year, Ukraine has successfully carried out long‑range strikes deep into Russia, targeting energy infrastructure and warehouses, with some incidents leading to civilian casualties. Conversely, Russia has launched attacks on residential zones throughout the conflict, causing widespread harm to its own civilians. The escalating cycle of strikes adds further complexity to an already volatile security situation.
