Police on Monday said a 15‑year‑old student was detained after a shooting outside the Inci Uzmez Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School in the western province of Manisa. Eleven students were wounded, two of whom remain in critical condition.
Video from the school’s CCTV station captured the suspect in casual clothing, walking on a street with a shotgun in hand, before fleeing the scene. Investigators later found the student still holding the weapon.
The suspect’s mother, father and grandfather, who allegedly owned the firearm, were also taken into custody. Turkish officials highlighted that the teenager is yet to face formal court proceedings.
The attack marks the third school shooting in Turkey this year. Earlier in April, two gunmen killed nine students in different schools, prompting a national debate over gun legislation and school security. The education ministry condemned the incident as a “deep sorrow for our nation” and dispatched three national investigators to Manisa.
The recent spate of violence has reignited discussions on stringent gun control measures during the 2026‑2027 academic year. In a statement, the ministry said it will review the current safety protocols to prevent future incidents.
