In brief

Emergency efforts are underway as Mayotte copes with unprecedented destruction, raising alarms over potential casualties and urgent relief needs.

Emergency workers rushed to rescue survivors on Monday in Mayotte, a French archipelago in the Indian Ocean battered by Tropical Cyclone Chido over the weekend. The storm has officially claimed at least 14 lives and left over 250 injured, according to preliminary reports, with relief efforts complicated by extensive damage to infrastructure, including homes, hospitals, and schools. Local authorities have voiced grave concerns that the actual death toll may be significantly higher than reported, with François-Xavier Bieuville, France’s top representative in Mayotte, indicating a potential figure reaching hundreds or even thousands. “I think that there will be several hundred deaths,” Bieuville stated during an interview with a local news channel.France's interior minister, Bruno Retailleau, visited the main island on Monday and confirmed that it would take days to ascertain the full extent of casualties. In response to the unfolding crisis, President Emmanuel Macron has called an emergency meeting scheduled for Monday evening. Chido is noted as the most destructive storm to hit Mayotte in nearly a century, with gusts exceeding 124 miles per hour. In addition to the devastation in Mayotte, the cyclone has also reportedly led to at least three fatalities in Mozambique, as per initial estimates provided by local officials to Agence France-Presse. As rescue and recovery operations continue, there are worries about the likelihood of a humanitarian crisis in Mayotte, which is already recognized as France's poorest overseas territory. The international community's response and immediate relief efforts will be critical in the coming days as the island grapples with the catastrophic effects of Cyclone Chido.
