In brief

Tropical Cyclone Dana is predicted to make landfall in Odisha, leading to the evacuation of nearly one million people. With winds comparable to a Category 1 hurricane, the cyclone poses risks of severe flooding and landslides. Authorities have prepared extensively, recalling lessons from past disasters.

As Tropical Cyclone Dana nears the eastern coast of India, authorities have initiated a major evacuation plan, relocating about one million residents from vulnerable areas of Odisha and West Bengal. The cyclone, which has sustained winds of approximately 75 miles per hour and is akin to a Category 1 hurricane, is expected to make landfall overnight along Odisha's coastline. In an effort to safeguard lives, the government has established over 5,000 relief camps for evacuees. Minister Suresh Pujari of Odisha's revenue and disaster management board stated that extensive preparations have been made to mitigate the potential devastation. The memories of the catastrophic cyclone in 1999, which claimed nearly 10,000 lives, have guided current responses, including the construction of shelters and the formulation of efficient evacuation routes. As the storm approaches, India has mobilized its navy along with other disaster management teams to facilitate relief efforts. Weather forecasts predict that regions in Odisha and West Bengal will experience two to four inches of rain, with localized areas facing the possibility of over eight inches, raising concerns about flooding and landslides. In preparation for the impending cyclone, numerous flights have been canceled, including those from Kolkata Airport and Biju Patnaik International Airport, which have suspended operations for at least 15 hours. Indian Railways has also responded by canceling over 100 trains. Furthermore, educational institutions in dozens of districts across Odisha and West Bengal have halted classes and examinations since Wednesday, and fishing activities in the Bay of Bengal are currently prohibited. The cyclone's potential impact may damage infrastructure and agriculture, as well as disrupt access to essential services, making this a critical moment for the affected states. As the nation braces for Cyclone Dana, the urgency of effective communication and disaster response remains paramount.
