In a closely fought presidential runoff, Yamandú Orsi of the Broad Front reclaimed Uruguay's presidency, succeeding the conservative coalition that has ruled for five years, marking a significant shift in the political landscape.

MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay — In a decisive shift in Uruguay’s political landscape, former mayor and history teacher Yamandú Orsi emerged victorious in Sunday’s presidential election, defeating Álvaro Delgado from the ruling National Party. Orsi, representing the center-left Broad Front, made his win official as ballots were still being tallied, with Delgado conceding defeat and expressing his respectful acknowledgment of the new president-elect.Orsi received 784,523 votes compared to Delgado’s 771,434, reflecting the close nature of the contest. Delgado’s concession marked the end of a conservative administration that began in 2020, a shift away from the Broad Front, which had dominated Uruguayan politics for 15 years prior.President Luis Lacalle Pou, who came to power in 2020, congratulated Orsi and promised a smooth transition, stating, “I will put myself at his service and begin the transition as soon as I deem it appropriate.” The Broad Front has been known for its progressive agenda, having legalized abortion, same-sex marriage, and marijuana during its previous term.As celebration ensued among Orsi’s supporters, the Broad Front's official statement expressed hope for a brighter future under his leadership, declaring that “joy will return” to Uruguay. The victory not only signifies a shift in governance but also an energizing reminder of Uruguay’s commitment to progressive social policies.
