A Breakthrough Database for Uncommon Animal Health Insights

A new online database allows wildlife veterinary professionals to visualize the inner anatomy of rare species for better medical assessment.

In brief

The recent introduction of the Zoo and Aquarium Radiology Database illuminates the internal structures of uncommon animals, aiding vets in diagnosing medical issues effectively.

With a collection of over 1,000 X-rays and CT scans from 50 species, the database aims to expand to 10,000 images of 500 species by 2026—providing critical reference for veterinary professionals.Amidst rising concerns for wildlife health, a new initiative led by Dr. Michael Adkesson, of Brookfield Zoo in Chicago, is stepping up to bridge the knowledge gap in veterinary care for less common species. He recalls a time in 2018 when a black rhino at the zoo faced perplexing respiratory issues. With limited knowledge and no clear reference points, it was challenging for radiologists to interpret the creature's internal structures during a CT scan.To counter this, Dr. Adkesson and collaborators from seven other zoological institutions established the Zoo and Aquarium Radiology Database. This extensive online repository collects and shares over 1,000 medical images—including X-rays and CT scans—spanning 50 unique species, such as the greater roadrunner, cotton-top tamarin, and bowmouth guitarfish. The endeavor's long-term vision is ambitious, targeting an impressive growth to 10,000 images covering up to 500 different species by the year 2026. This extensive database will empower veterinary professionals with better resources to diagnose and treat endangered and under-studied species, thus contributing significantly to wildlife conservation and health. If successful, the project holds transformative potential for wildlife medicine, allowing veterinarians to glean vital insights into the anatomy and health of species that often lack comprehensive medical documentation.
