In brief
Amid escalating tensions, Gulf states are seeking to defuse the India-Pakistan conflict that reignited following recent military actions.
In the midst of escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are stepping up as mediators in an effort to prevent further conflict. The situation has worsened significantly over the past two weeks, following Indian accusations that Pakistan was involved in a terrorist attack on April 22 in Kashmir, a disputed region claimed by both nations. In response, India conducted airstrikes targeting areas within Pakistan and the Pakistani-administered portion of Kashmir on Wednesday.Historically, the United States has played a crucial role in mediating conflicts in South Asia, but it has remained largely on the sidelines during this escalation. In a noteworthy response, senior Saudi diplomat Adel al-Jubeir engaged in face-to-face discussions with leaders in both New Delhi and Islamabad this past week. Pakistani officials have also highlighted their ongoing communication with ambassadors from other Gulf nations, including Kuwait and the UAE. Additionally, the foreign minister of Iran has visited both countries, showcasing the broader regional concern for stability. The Gulf states maintain significant influence in both India and Pakistan, bolstered by strong economic links, security partnerships, and sizeable Indian expatriate communities. Saudi Arabia has relied on Pakistani military expertise for decades, emphasizing the historical ties that bind them. In previous crises, notably in 2019, Saudi Arabia and the UAE successfully facilitated dialogue after tensions flared following Indian airstrikes in response to an attack in Kashmir.Experts suggest that the Gulf nations see their role in mediating such conflicts as a means to enhance their prestige while also safeguarding their security and economic interests. “They see mediation as a source of prestige and influence,” noted Hasan Alhasan, a senior fellow at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in Bahrain. Such diplomatic efforts not only aim to alleviate immediate tensions but also to foster a long-term peace, as evidenced by the successful talks and ceasefire agreements established in prior instances.
