Kit Harington Steps into Gilderoy Lockhart in HBO’s Harry Potter Series
HBO’s highly‑anticipated Harry Potter television adaptation has confirmed the first cast change with Kit Harington taking over the role of Gilderoy Lockhart from Nicholas Hoult. Hoult, who was originally cast earlier this month, departed the project due to scheduling conflicts, according to a statement from HBO.
Harington is best known for playing Jon Snow in Game of Thrones and for his voice work in the audio version of “Harry Potter.” He was quoted as saying, “I’ve always been a huge Potter fan, and Lockhart is one of my favorite characters… So playing him is a real dream.”
The series will air its first season this Christmas on HBO Max, covering the events of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Season two will adapt the second book, The Chamber of Secrets, and the franchise is projected to take ten years to cover all seven novels.
In addition to Harington, the cast includes Dominic McLaughlin as young Harry, Arabelle Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. John Lithgow will portray Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore, while Nick Frost takes on the role of gamekeeper Rubeus Hagrid. Mark Mylod – who worked on Game of Thrones – will serve as an executive producer alongside J.K. Rowling.
The decision to replace Hoult has sparked debate among fans, with some criticizing him for aligning with J.K. Rowling’s controversial statements on gender identity and trans rights. No formal comment has yet been made by either actor’s representatives.
