In brief

American zoos, relying on panda exhibits for revenue, have allocated around $86 million for conservation efforts in China. However, a recent investigation shows troubling uncertainties regarding the actual use of these funds, with intended conservation projects sometimes diverted to unrelated expenses.

Recent scrutiny has highlighted a significant gap in the accountability of the funds American zoos allocate to panda conservation in China. These zoos, known for attracting large crowds and generating substantial merchandise sales through their panda exhibits, are required to show that they contribute to the well-being of the species in the wild. In return for housing pandas, they pay fees to two Chinese governmental bodies meant to support conservation initiatives. In an extensive exploration involving 10,000 pages of financial documentation, researchers uncovered the flow of approximately $86 million from U.S. zoos to China over the years. Alarmingly, many zoos did not have clear visibility into how their contributions were being utilized. While some funds went to essential conservation tools such as patrol vehicles, many were found to be spent on unrelated infrastructure, including apartment complexes and computer systems, or to cover operational costs for Chinese zoos themselves. Despite concerns regarding financial transparency, American zoos have not publicly disclosed these practices, even as U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service regulators have intermittently frozen payments due to inadequate record-keeping. This situation prompts critical questions about the true impact of American zoos' financial commitments to panda conservation in China and the broader implications for species protection efforts globally.
