In brief
Israel's military is intensifying its response to Houthi missile strikes, leading to a dangerous cycle of escalation in the region.
The Israeli military reported on Wednesday that it successfully intercepted a drone approaching from the east, amid rising tensions with the Houthi group from Yemen. This event follows a pledge by Houthi officials to persist in their attacks against Israel after President Trump announced a reduction of U.S. military involvement in the conflicts surrounding the Iranian-backed group.A statement from the Israeli armed forces confirmed the drone interception—complete with warning sirens activated during the incident. While the source of the drone remains unclear, Houthi spokesman Mohamed Abdelsalam asserted their commitment to retaliate against Israeli actions in Yemen and the ongoing Gaza conflict. "We cannot accept Yemen being targeted and violated without a response," Abdelsalam stated in an interview with Al Jazeera. This week’s Israeli airstrikes on Yemen reportedly resulted in at least seven fatalities and have significantly impacted Yemen's primary international airport, resulting in extensive damage estimated at $500 million. Khaled Al-Shaif, the airport director, detailed the destruction of three aircraft and immediate suspension of all flights. In retaliation for a Houthi missile strike that targeted the vicinity of Ben-Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv over the weekend, Israeli fighter jets conducted airstrikes on several Yemeni locations. As a direct consequence of these exchanges, numerous airlines have temporarily halted operations in and out of Israel following injuries sustained in the rocket attack. As both sides continue to escalate their military efforts, the potential for broader conflict remains a grave concern for the region and international observers alike.
