In brief

Mexico and Peru have agreed to resume diplomatic relations following a row that erupted when former Peruvian prime minister Betssy Chávez sought asylum in the Mexican embassy in November 2025. A joint statement released August 7 highlighted the historic friendship and commitment to respect international law that underpins the reconciliation. Peruvian Foreign Minister Carlos Espá confirmed that Chávez had been granted safe passage to Mexico, though Peru still maintains the right to extradite the former PM should it wish. The settlement comes amid a new political landscape, with Keiko Fujimori inaugurated as Peru’s president last week and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum welcoming Chávez to Mexico. The move aims to ease tensions that stemmed from accusations of a 2022 coup attempt involving former President Pedro Castillo.

Mexico and Peru have agreed to re‑establish diplomatic relations after a row that erupted when former Peruvian prime minister Betssy Chávez sought asylum in the Mexican embassy last November.

A joint statement released on 7 August highlighted the historic friendship, brotherhood and cooperation that had bound the two nations, and the commitment to uphold international law and UNESCO principles.

Peruvian Foreign Minister Carlos Espá told RPP that Chávez had been granted safe passage and had already left Peru, and that Peru still holds the right to request extradition of the former PM. The settlement comes amid a new political landscape, with Keiko Fujimori recently sworn in as president and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum welcoming Chávez to Mexico.

Chávez was charged for her alleged role in a 2022 coup attempt that toppled President Pedro Castillo; she was imprisoned in June 2023, released on bail in September 2025, and now serves a prison sentence (over 11 years) while awaiting further legal proceedings.

With the restoration of diplomatic relations, Mexico and Peru aim to smooth tensions that had flared over the asylum dispute, signaling a fresh start under the new Peruvian administration.
