In brief

Amsterdam police have made additional arrests regarding violent incidents involving Israeli soccer supporters, with ongoing tensions linked to the war in Gaza provoking unrest in the city.

The police in Amsterdam have taken five more individuals into custody after violent altercations directed towards Israeli soccer fans last week, bringing the total number of detainees to eight. The arrests took place following a match between the Israeli team Maccabi Tel Aviv and Dutch team Ajax. Authorities reported that four of the detained men, aged between 18 and 37, remain in custody, with further arrests anticipated as the investigation unfolds. The police have encouraged witnesses to submit any video evidence to assist their inquiries. In remarks made on Monday, Dick Schoof, the Prime Minister of the Netherlands, addressed the violence, attributing the actions of the perpetrators predominantly to individuals with “a migration background.” He highlighted this situation as indicative of broader integration challenges within society.Amsterdam has witnessed a year marked by significant tensions linked to the ongoing Gaza conflict, which escalated with the Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. While many protests supporting Gaza have remained peaceful, several have turned confrontational. Recently, one protest significantly disrupted the opening of a new Holocaust museum in the city. On Monday night, unrest persisted as riot police responded to vandalism incidents, including fireworks being thrown, which resulted in the torching of a tram in a western Amsterdam square. Authorities have advised the public to steer clear of affected areas.Additionally, in neighboring Antwerp, Belgium, two minors aged 14 and 17 were arrested over the weekend for allegedly inciting violence against Jewish residents via social media, highlighting the heightened tensions impacting the region across borders.
