In brief

A Polish national, Jacek Dobrzynski, was arrested in the Lower Silesia region after police received credible information of an attempt to kill Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak‑Kamysz. Security services said the threats were “deadly serious” and warned that they could be carried out. Tusk thanked the police for swift action, and a spokesperson from the Special Services Coordinator confirmed the strong likelihood of an actual attack. The plan was uncovered when an email detailing the potential assault was forwarded to the State Protection Service. The incident underscores heightened security concerns amid rising political tensions in Poland.

The Polish Interior Ministry announced that a man suspected of planning an assassination of Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak‑Kamysz has been detained.

Tusk thanked the police for their "swift and decisive action" in the arrest, according to a statement released by his office.

Security services convened a special meeting on Sunday after receiving credible information that an attack could be carried out against the two officials. Officials described the threat as "deadly serious" and warned that the plan could ultimately be implemented.

The suspect, Jacek Dobrzynski—a Polish national arrested in the Lower Silesia region—was identified after an email with details of the potential attack was forwarded to the State Protection Service, which handles ministerial security.

"In this case we are talking about a strong likelihood that these threats could actually be carried out," a spokesman for the Special Services Coordinator said to local media.

Tusk has served as Poland’s prime minister since 2023, following a previous term from 2007 to 2014. He was also president of the European Council between 2014 and 2019.
