In brief

The Taiwanese Coast Guard has initiated an investigation into allegations that a ship associated with China caused damage to a critical undersea internet cable, highlighting vulnerabilities in Taiwan's infrastructure amid heightened tensions in the region.

Taiwanese authorities are probing a Hong Kong-registered cargo ship believed to be connected to seven Chinese nationals regarding the damage it allegedly caused to an undersea internet cable northeast of the island. This situation has raised fresh concerns about the security of Taiwan's telecommunications infrastructure during a time of escalating tensions with China. Reported on January 7, 2025, by journalists in Taipei and New York, the claims follow a pattern of increasing anxiety in Europe over apparent sabotage acts targeting similar undersea cables. Notably, two fiber-optic cables in the Baltic Sea were severed in November, after which authorities from Sweden, Finland, and Lithuania detained a Chinese-flagged vessel believed to be implicated. After the damage to the Trans-Pacific Express Cable—vital for connectivity between Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, China, and the United States—was identified, Taiwan quickly rerouted communications without significant service disruption. The Coast Guard intercepted the suspected vessel near Keelung shortly after the incident, where several undersea cables reach land. Authorities confirmed the ship is owned by a Hong Kong company and operated by a crew of Chinese nationals. Though pinpointing whether the cable damage was deliberate remains difficult, analysts view the incident as a possible tactic of intimidation and psychological warfare from China, aiming to undermine Taiwan's security. With multiple undersea cables crucial to its internet connectivity, Taiwan remains on high alert for future vulnerabilities from increasing maritime activity near its coast.
