A Russian general who was shot several times in Moscow has regained consciousness following successful surgery, according to Russian media. Lt. Gen. Vladimir Alexeyev, serving as deputy head of military intelligence, was attacked in the early hours of Friday as he entered his apartment building on the north-western outskirts of the capital.

The 64-year-old general was in serious condition and underwent an emergency surgery at a Moscow hospital. Medical sources have noted that the immediate threat to his life has passed, with reports stating he was placed in a medically induced coma but has since woken up.

Russian authorities have arrested two suspects believed to be responsible for the attack. Reports suggested that Alexeyev suffered three bullet wounds to his chest or abdomen during the ambush. A neighbor heard multiple gunshots followed by cries for help.

In the aftermath of the shooting, Russian officials, including Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, have blamed Ukraine, alleging the incident aimed to disrupt ongoing negotiations. However, Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha categorically denied any involvement, although Kyiv has previously claimed responsibility for attacks on Russian military officials.

This incident is part of a troubling trend where high-ranking military figures have been targeted since the onset of the conflict in Ukraine. Alexeyev was already a notable figure in military circles, having played significant roles in Moscow's military strategies in both Ukraine and Syria and facing sanctions from the EU and UK for alleged involvement in past conflicts.

Russian investigators have initiated a criminal case for attempted murder regarding this incident, and a court hearing is expected soon to determine the pretrial detention of the arrested suspects.
