In brief

A Syrian refugee's alleged stabbing of a tourist highlights rising antisemitism and immigration tensions in Germany as elections loom.

A 19-year-old Syrian refugee, detained in connection to a stabbing incident at Berlin's Holocaust memorial, is suspected of plotting the attack with alleged religious motives. According to Berlin police, the suspect had been formulating a plan to target Jewish people over several weeks, highlighting an unsettling trend of rising antisemitism in Europe as Germany approaches a contentious national election. On Friday, the suspect attacked a 30-year-old Spanish tourist at the memorial, leaving him with severe neck injuries that required emergency surgery and placing him in a medically induced coma. Fortunately, the victim's life is no longer in danger, according to officials.Authorities stated that the suspect was found with religious items including a Quran and a prayer rug at the time of his arrest. In addition, they located a piece of paper that included the date of the attack along with Quran verses, suggesting the attack may have had a "religious motivation." Nevertheless, they clarified that while there could be connections to the Middle East conflict, no links to organized groups had been uncovered.Having arrived in Germany as an unaccompanied minor refugee in 2023, the suspect had no prior criminal history, leading police to investigate whether mental health issues played a factor in his actions. The stabbing occurred just days before divisive national elections in Germany, where immigration concerns have heightened political tensions. With rising economic issues exacerbating public dissatisfaction, the far-right Alternative for Germany party (AfD), which has ties to neo-Nazi groups, is gaining popularity. The party's stance advocates for stricter immigration policies and the deportation of immigrants, fueled by recent attacks involving asylum seekers, including a car-ramming incident in Munich earlier this month. The upcoming elections reflect Germany's ongoing struggle with immigration and the simmering tensions surrounding rising antisemitism, as authorities continue to examine the implications of this latest violent incident.
