ATLANTA (AP) — Severe storms have caused massive disruptions in air travel across the eastern half of the United States, with many travelers facing delays and cancellations just as the spring travel season kicks into high gear. As of early Tuesday, over 550 flights were canceled nationwide, and more than 460 were delayed according to flight-tracking site FlightAware.
The fallout from these storms is compounded by a partial government shutdown that began on February 14, putting pressure on TSA staffing at airport security checkpoints. This situation has led to increased wait times at security, frustrating travelers who are already stressed by travel disruptions.
Major airports including Chicago O’Hare, Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson, and New York’s LaGuardia have reported significant cancellations and delays. The Federal Aviation Administration implemented ground stops at Hartsfield-Jackson and Charlotte Douglas airports due to the severe weather conditions, which have included heavy snow and the potential for tornadoes, according to the National Weather Service.
One traveler, Kelly Price, expressed her frustration after her flight home to Colorado from Orlando was canceled, forcing her family to spend the night on the airport floor. Another passenger, Danielle Cash, was stranded in a snowy St. Louis while attempting to return to Tampa after a girls' trip to Vegas, incurring unexpected hotel costs.
TSA Staffing Strains
The combination of inclement weather and TSA staffing shortages has raised concerns about further delays. Travelers have been advised to arrive earlier than usual for flights, with some airports recommending up to three hours in advance. The ongoing political landscape surrounding the shutdown, which limits funding to the Department of Homeland Security, causes further hardship for TSA agents who have gone without pay.
Union leaders have criticized the political chess game impacting federal funding, stating that many TSA workers are grappling with financial pressures leading to a higher rate of resignations. With the potential for flight delays and cancellations still looming, travelers are left to navigate a challenging travel landscape amidst adverse weather and government-induced closures.
