In brief
In a time dominated by air raids and warfare, the community in Transcarpathia represents a rare pocket of tranquility in Ukraine's turbulent landscape.
Amidst the chaos of war in Ukraine, one region has remarkably managed to sidestep the violence and turmoil afflicting much of the country: Transcarpathia. Tucked away in the westernmost part of Ukraine, this picturesque region, featuring serene cobblestone streets and breathtaking landscapes, has, over the last three years, seen almost no Russian military action. As a result, life carries on relatively unaffected, presenting a stark contrast to the experiences of cities like Kyiv, where relentless drone strikes and air alerts dominate daily existence.Late at night in the city of Mukachevo, locals enjoy life as usual. A group of students can be seen lingering near the river, debating what snack to pick up from a nearby supermarket. Nearby, a boisterous crowd of young men arrive, reveling in the night as if nothing was amiss. For the people of Mukachevo, this scene is just another Sunday night before a new workweek begins, a luxury many of their compatriots cannot afford during wartime.“We don’t have the sound of explosions, we don’t have rockets, we don’t have frequent air alarms,” noted 20-year-old Oleksandr Pop, reflecting on the unique climate of calm in Transcarpathia. In fact, the region is the only area in Ukraine that currently does not impose a nighttime curfew, allowing for a semblance of normalcy amid a horrific backdrop. In contrast, the capital city of Kyiv has witnessed a staggering 130 hours of air raid alerts in the past month alone, as it grapples with a series of increasingly aggressive drone attacks. With only a handful of assaults recorded in Transcarpathia, the locals find themselves in a unique position—nearly sheltered from the ravaging reality of war.As the Ukraine-Russia conflict continues, the story of Transcarpathia serves as a poignant reminder that even in places torn apart by violence, pockets of peace persist and communities fight to scrape together normalcy against all odds.
