In brief
In light of the suspension of U.S. military aid, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is recalibrating his strategies towards President Trump, influenced by counsel from British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron.
Zelensky's adaptation follows a disappointing encounter with Trump, prompting advice from European leaders that culminated in a shift in his public positioning. After five days of discussions post his reprimand at the White House, Zelensky pivoted towards a focus on gratitude for prior U.S. support and reassurance regarding peace negotiations. This comes in the wake of an announcement from the White House indicating the cessation of American aid to Ukraine, enhancing the urgency of the situation for Zelensky. The advice from Starmer and Macron aimed to alleviate the tensions that emerged after Zelensky's meeting with Trump. Despite initial ideas to immediately engage Trump in another meeting, they concluded that cooling down was essential. Zelensky's new strategy involves adopting a tone of admiration towards Trump's leadership. In a recent statement via social media, he expressed Ukraine's readiness to collaborate under Trump's guidance to pursue lasting peace, suggesting concrete measures such as halting missile attacks, in a bid to dispel Trump’s allegations of Ukraine's reluctance towards peace talks.
