In brief
Three Uzbek nationals have been arrested in the United Arab Emirates for their alleged roles in the abduction and murder of Rabbi Zvi Kogan, an act that has significantly raised concerns for the safety of the country's Jewish community.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced on Monday the apprehension of three Uzbeks linked to the kidnapping and murder of Rabbi Zvi Kogan, a dual citizen of Israel and Moldova, who was killed in Dubai. This incident has sparked fears regarding the safety of the small Jewish community in the UAE. The Interior Ministry of the UAE confirmed the identities of the suspects as 28-year-olds Olimboy Tohirovich and Makhmudjon Abdurakhim, along with 33-year-old Azizbek Kamilovich, and released images showcasing them blindfolded and handcuffed. They are under investigation as authorities seek to determine the circumstances surrounding the crime and its motives.Rabbi Kogan was reported missing late last week, with his last known sighting occurring in Dubai. His abandoned vehicle was later discovered in Al Ain, a city near the border with Oman, and his body was found on Sunday. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the attack, characterizing it as a "horrific antisemitic terrorist act." Rabbi Kogan was a visible figure within the Jewish community, managing a kosher supermarket in Dubai and serving under the Chabad-Lubavitch movement, known for its global Jewish outreach. The Israeli Foreign Ministry is facilitating the return of Kogan's remains to Jerusalem for his funeral, expected to take place shortly after a forensic examination. The murder raises alarm within the Jewish community in the UAE, which has seen an increase in Israeli settlers since the 2020 Abraham Accords established formal ties between Israel and the Emirates. While the UAE has positioned itself as a nation of tolerance and diversity, the recent violence poses a stark contrast to that image. Yousef al-Otaiba, the UAE ambassador to the United States, labeled the murder a "criminal act against the UAE," emphasizing the nation’s commitment to protecting its residents, regardless of faith. As investigators continue to probe the motives behind the crime, the implications for Jewish communities in the region remain a point of serious concern.
