In brief
During the annual olive harvest in Abu Falah, West Bank, masked Israeli settlers launched a violent ambush on Palestinian farmers and a U.S. journalist. The attackers used guns, rocks, and stick‑weapons, setting fires to cars and olive trees. At least 12 Palestinians, including four U.S. citizens, were injured, and Washington Post journalist Heidi Levine was also hit. The U.S. State Department condemned the violence, calling for a thorough investigation, while the IDF dispatched forces to the scene amid unclear reporting. The United Nations reports this year’s settler attacks have killed one person and injured more than 120 others across the West Bank.
At dawn on 16 October, a convoy of Palestinian olive pickers racing along a narrow stony track in Abu Falah was met by a sudden onslaught of masked Israeli settlers. The attackers fired guns, hurled rocks, and struck the farmers with nail‑studded sticks, setting several cars and olive trees ablaze.
Eyewitness Majdi Fheed, a Palestinian-American citizen, described the assault: “They hit me on my head and neck – I am bleeding!” His elderly mother was also wounded, while another farmer’s vehicle was set on fire.
American journalist Heidi Levine of the Washington Post was caught in the midst of the violence. She said, “They jumped me, kicked me while I tried to hold my camera. I had a helmet and flak jacket – they kept kicking for at least ten minutes.” The Washington Post’s executive editor demanded a full investigation and put the responsibility on Israeli authorities.
The U.S. State Department, upon receiving the reports, condemned the “criminal violence” and called for arrests, investigations and convictions of those responsible. Israeli forces arrived shortly after the ambush and fired tear gas into the fields to disperse the settlers, though it remains unclear whether they fired on the farmers.
According to the United Nations, this year’s settler attacks on the West Bank olive harvest have already killed one Palestinian and injured more than 120 others. The surge of illegal Jewish outposts around Palestinian groves has made the annual harvest a boiling point of conflict.
The incident underscores the growing violence tied to Israel’s pro‑settlement policies, turning a time‑honoured harvest into a daily flashpoint for aggression.
