In brief
The Saudi sovereign wealth fund's venture seeks to develop a boxing league featuring up-and-coming talent, in a move reflecting its growing footprint in global sports, following past investments.
In a bold new move into professional sports, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) is preparing to launch its own boxing league in partnership with TKO, the parent organization of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). This potential collaboration comes on the heels of Saudi Arabia’s significant financial investments in various sports over the last several years, as the kingdom aims to establish itself as a key player in the world of athletics.Sources familiar with the negotiations suggest that announcements regarding the new league could be imminent. The envisioned boxing league will showcase emerging boxers and create a structured platform in a historically fragmented industry, where rival promoters and multiple sanctioning bodies often complicate the competitive landscape.Currently, TKO has expressed no official stance on the impending agreement, stating only that it is open to reviewing promising opportunities that could augment its portfolio. Notably, TKO is primarily controlled by Endeavor, a leading talent agency in Hollywood, represented by Dana White, a prominent figure in mixed martial arts and a long-time acquaintance of former President Donald Trump. This announcement follows an ambitious but challenging initiative launched by Saudi Arabia in June, aimed at forming a multibillion-dollar boxing league to unify the sport’s best talents. Despite the initial effort being fraught with complexities and high costs, the governing body is keen on continuing its pursuit in sports investment. For this new initiative, funding and operational oversight will be managed through Sela, a subsidiary of the Public Investment Fund. In exchange for its involvement, TKO would reportedly gain equity and revenue shares, thereby cementing a substantial investment from Saudi Arabia in a rapidly evolving sports landscape. As both parties work toward finalizing the deal, the implications could reshape how boxing operates on a global scale.
