In brief
New mpox subtype Clade Ia poses greater threat with a deadly toll in Africa.
Authorities in Britain recently disclosed that two new cases of mpox, a variant responsible for a severe outbreak in central Africa, have emerged. The UK Health Security Agency confirmed on Monday that both affected individuals had household contacts with an already infected person, allowing health officials to conclude that the risk of a rapid spread remains low.All three infected individuals are receiving treatment at hospitals in London, and vaccines for mpox have been administered to the patients. “Mpox is very infectious in households with close contact, so additional cases in the same household were anticipated,” remarked Susan Hopkins, chief medical adviser at the agency.Mpox, previously known as monkeypox, has been endemic to West and Central Africa for over 50 years. The illness surged globally in 2022, reaching Europe, the United States, and other regions. After a decline in cases last year, mpox cases remained low throughout Britain and Europe. However, the newly identified cases feature the Clade Ia subtype, which has resulted in over 30,000 infections and nearly 990 fatalities in the Democratic Republic of Congo this year alone, as reported by the World Health Organization. UNICEF confirmed a worrying trend, noting that over half of the new mpox cases in Congo are among children, highlighting the urgent need for continued monitoring and preventive measures.
