In brief

Murray Sinclair, celebrated as the first Indigenous judge in Manitoba and a revered senator, has left an indelible mark through his work on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. His journey and the impact of his legacy were honored during a national memorial service following his passing.

A national memorial service was held this week to honor the remarkable life of Murray Sinclair, who made history as the first Indigenous judge in Manitoba and served as a senator. Sinclair gained national prominence through his leadership in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada from 2009 to 2015, providing crucial insight into the country's relationship with Indigenous peoples. In 2021, during the height of the pandemic, I had the opportunity to engage in multiple conversations with Mr. Sinclair while profiling his work shortly after his Senate tenure concluded. These discussions continued later that year following the Tk’emlups te Secwepemc First Nation’s revelation of a ground-penetrating radar survey that indicated 215 unmarked graves of mostly children around the former Kamloops Indian Residential School in British Columbia.Sinclair's personal story is equally impactful. He lost his mother at a tender age and grew up under the care of his grandparents and a close-knit family. In our conversations, he recounted a haunting memory from his childhood about his grandmother. She had been sent to a Roman Catholic convent adjacent to a residential school. He shared how deeply tragic it was for her to be separated from her family during those formative years, forced into captivity akin to many other girls of her time who faced similar fates.Sinclair’s commitment to reshaping the dialogue surrounding Indigenous relations in Canada has left an enduring legacy that continues to influence the nation’s path towards healing and reconciliation. His passing marks a significant moment for reflection on the progress that still needs to be made.
