In brief

In a significant ruling on December 24, 2024, a Dutch court found five defendants guilty of public violence connected to assaults on supporters of Maccabi Tel Aviv during their match against Ajax. The incidents occurred on November 7 in Amsterdam, where Israeli fans faced antisemitic attacks, often in unexpected hit-and-run style assaults. The court reported that prior to the game, extremist acts included the burning of a Palestinian flag and verbal assaults against taxi drivers.

The sentenced individuals received prison terms ranging from one to six months. Typically, offenders in similar cases might expect community service; however, the judge deemed imprisonment necessary in these instances. Some defendants were linked to a WhatsApp group named “Community Center II," where they coordinated attacks against Israeli fans and expressed intentions of violence against them, with one notably stating, “I may never get this chance again.”While the court acknowledged that the actions of Israeli supporters may have influenced societal tensions, it firmly stated that such context does not justify the violent behavior directed at them. As legal proceedings continue, the court is set to tackle additional serious charges, including attempted manslaughter, in the upcoming sessions.
