In brief
Beijing’s censorship efforts reveal how it shapes public discourse amid external economic pressures.
Chinese authorities are intensifying their control over online discussions related to the U.S. tariffs imposed on Wednesday. As tariffs rise to an eye-popping 104 percent on Chinese goods due to President Trump’s latest economic move, state censors are focused on guiding public sentiment. Discussions around certain hashtags, particularly those referencing the number 104, have been blocked on Weibo, a widely-used social media platform in the country. Hashtags such as “104 tariff rate” and “America to impose 104 percent tariff on Chinese goods” returned an error message, indicating that the dialogue around these specifics would not be tolerated. Meanwhile, state-sponsored hashtags mocking the U.S. and highlighting China’s resilience were allowed to circulate freely. The catchy phrase “America is fighting a trade war while begging for eggs” gained traction, originating from China Central Television (CCTV), the state broadcaster. Another popular narrative promoted by state outlets emphasized, “China does not provoke trouble but is never afraid of it.” In line with this, the People’s Daily, the official newspaper of the Chinese Communist Party, ran editorials suggesting that years of trade friction have taught China to diversify its economy and withstand pressures. They claimed, “In Chinese people’s genes, we never fear any risks or challenges,” underscoring a spirit of resilience facing external economic strife. Despite not directly acknowledging the tariffs, state media have been vocal about the steps the government is undertaking to boost job creation for fresh graduates, reinforcing a narrative of stability amidst uncertainty. Additionally, influencers on Weibo have joined in the conversation, asserting that the trade conflict highlights America's decline and urging China to showcase its strengths more boldly. Such responses underline the government’s commitment not only to control information but also to harness it to foster a narrative of national pride during challenging economic interactions with the West.
