In brief
In a tragic development, the body of the fourth U.S. soldier was found in Lithuania on Tuesday, a week after they, alongside three others, went missing when their armored vehicle sank in a bog during a training exercise. The U.S. Army has initiated an inquiry into the incident.
The soldier's identity has not yet been disclosed, as search efforts initially focused on three soldiers who were reported missing when their 70-ton armored vehicle, an M88A2 Hercules, failed to return during an operation to extract another military vehicle. According to Army officials, it's believed they may have veered off-road, getting trapped in the bog, leading to the vehicle's submersion. An extensive search effort was launched involving multiple nations, including Lithuania, Poland, and Estonia, with teams deployed to locate the soldiers. The vehicle was located on March 26, but the arduous extraction process necessitated heavy machinery and support from divers and high-tech drones.Gen. Christopher Donahue, commander of U.S. Army Europe and Africa, praised the cooperative efforts of the Lithuanian military and expressed gratitude for their assistance in recovering the soldiers. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda also expressed condolences and emphasized the collaboration of NATO allies during this time of grief. As tensions rise in the Baltic region regarding the stability of NATO with the current U.S. administration, the international efforts in this recovery have underscored the importance of unity among allies.
