In brief

Authorities investigate safety practices as more incidents highlight dangers of public transport.

Ten people have tragically lost their lives, and over 30 others have sustained injuries following a catastrophic bus incident at a toll gate on a major highway in the northern Philippines. According to police reports, the bus driver, who has since been taken into custody, claimed he had fallen asleep while operating the vehicle, which collided with several other automobiles, resulting in the fatalities, including four children. The unfortunate event occurred on the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway, a vital route used frequently by buses transporting workers from Manila to nearby provinces. The accident took place as families were on the move in observance of Labor Day. In response to the incident, the Department of Transportation announced the suspension of operations for Solid North Bus, the company responsible for the vehicle involved in the tragedy. The driver now faces potential charges of "reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicides," with the bus conductor also in custody. Reports indicate that the wreck involved additional vehicles, including three sports utility vehicles and a container truck. As a humanitarian effort, the Philippine Red Cross has been active, distributing food and medical assistance to those injured and receiving treatment.Bus safety remains a prominent concern in the Philippines, where accidents of this nature are unfortunately frequent. In recent weeks, issues regarding driver substance use have surfaced, though it remains unverified whether drugs played a role in this specific incident. Just last month, 84 drivers failed substance tests, prompting immediate action from authorities.Transport Secretary Vince Dizon is scheduled to engage with representatives from nearly 30 bus companies to address the alarming trend of accidents and positive drug tests among drivers. "I will confront them directly about the safety issues and the necessity for effective change," he noted. The urgency for reform is underscored by a previous incident earlier this year in which 17 bus passengers died due to brake failure, highlighting the ongoing safety challenges on Philippine roadways, including the notorious 'killer curve' known for such tragic outcomes.
