In brief

The application of advanced AI tools in military operations is transforming warfare strategies, but the implications for civilian safety are alarming.

In late 2023, Israel's efforts to eliminate Ibrahim Biari, a senior Hamas figure linked to the October 7 massacres, led them to utilize cutting-edge artificial intelligence technologies in their military operations within Gaza. Initially unsuccessful in locating Biari, Israeli intelligence shifted to newly integrated AI tools developed by engineers from Unit 8200, Israel's equivalent of the National Security Agency. On October 31, 2023, these technologies, designed to listen to and analyze calls, provided approximate tracking of Biari's whereabouts. Consequently, Israel executed targeted airstrikes, resulting not only in Biari's death but also in over 125 civilian casualties, as reported by Airwars, a London-based conflict monitoring organization. This incident exemplifies a broader trend where Israel has harnessed the urgency of conflict in Gaza to accelerate the testing and deployment of AI-influenced military technologies. In the past 18 months, the Israeli military has combined AI with facial recognition tools to identify individuals from partially obscured images, utilized AI to compile data on potential strike targets, and developed an Arabic-language AI model to monitor and analyze social media and messaging platforms. However, the quick advancements and applications of military technologies come with significant ethical and humanitarian concerns. The deployment of AI in warfare raises critical questions about accountability, the minimization of civilian casualties, and the overall impact of technology on contemporary conflict. With decisions now increasingly driven by algorithmic assessments, the potential for tragic outcomes—such as the loss of innocent lives—has become a stark and pressing reality in modern military engagement. As the operations continue, the effectiveness and morality of these AI-driven strategies will likely draw intense scrutiny from international observers and human rights advocates alike.
