In Yaoundé on Friday, a small theater in the Cameroonian capital hosted the premiere of "Kung Fu Dream," a documentary that follows a Cameroonian martial artist’s quest to master kung fu in China and reflects on China‑Africa cultural connections.
The screening drew an audience of nearly three hundred, according to reports circulated by the Chinese news agency Xinhua.
During the event, Martin Valere Oyono Bitounou, a representative of the Cameroonian Ministry of Arts and Culture, remarked that the film demonstrated the vitality of cultural exchanges across the two continents. He said the film shows how, despite differences, people can build bridges through shared traditions.
"Cameroon and China have every reason to continue deepening cultural exchanges, allowing the two peoples to better understand each other, share experiences and jointly build a new future," Oyono Bitounou said.
Director and lead actor Rodrigue Tene Taling, who also serves as executive director of the Center for African Film and Television at Zhejiang Normal University’s Institute of African Studies, expressed hope that the film would convey that kung fu is not merely a martial art, but a common language that encourages friendly exchanges among nations.
"Kung fu was not only a martial art but a common language that fosters encounters, mutual respect and friendly exchanges among people of all nations," Taling said.
The documentary, a collaboration between the Institute of African Studies of Zhejiang Normal University and Zhejiang Zhuowei Film and Television Culture Co., Ltd., is based on a true story and aims to highlight the shared human experience that can arise through cultural and artistic collaboration.
