In brief
On Sunday, two Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza Strip left eight Palestinians dead, including five police officers and a four‑year‑old child, local and medical sources reported. The strikes targeted al‑Mawasi near Khan Younis and the al‑Rimal neighbourhood close to Gaza City, adding to the toll since the 2025 ceasefire. Hamas condemned the attacks as a deliberate war crime, while Israeli officials said they were targeting a terrorist.
Two Israeli drone attacks on Sunday struck Gaza’s al‑Mawasi and Al‑Rimal neighbourhoods, killing eight Palestinians, including five police officers and a four‑year‑old child, local and medical sources say.
In the first strike, an Israeli drone fired a missile at a group of police personnel in al‑Mawasi, west of Khan Younis, according to local reports. Nasser Medical Complex confirmed five people were killed and several wounded, some seriously. Gaza’s Ministry of Interior said the five police officers were “performing routine duties” when they were hit.
A separate strike targeted a gathering in the Al‑Rimal area of Gaza City, killing three Palestinians, including a child, and wounding six others, medical sources at al‑Shifa Hospital added. The Taj Mall was also struck, and a fourth victim succumbed to wounds from a prior attack.
The Israeli army told the AFP news agency that it was targeting “a terrorist” in southern Gaza, a claim that remains unverified by independent witnesses.
Hamas issued a statement condemning the attacks as a “deliberate war crime” and accused Israel of “attempting to obstruct recovery efforts, undermine stability, and sow chaos.”
“This is yet another chapter in the ongoing series of Zionist atrocities against our Palestinian people…a continuation of the genocidal war whose tragic unfolding our people are still enduring,” a Hamas spokesperson said.
Gaza’s health authorities report that 1,580 Palestinians have been killed and 5,711 wounded in the enclave since the 2025 ceasefire, bringing the cumulative toll since the Oct. 7 2023 outbreak to 74,594 dead and 175,834 wounded.
