In brief

The ongoing total siege has led to alarming food and medical shortages, with dire repercussions for the Gazan population, including rising illness and death rates among vulnerable groups.

As the blockade continues unabated, its toll on the two million people living in Gaza becomes increasingly severe. More than 60 days have passed since Israel ceased all humanitarian aid to the region, leaving many without essential food, medical supplies, and even basic necessities like water. Muneer Alboursh, director general of Gaza’s health ministry, reports a desperate situation where phone calls from doctors seeking vital medications are becoming more frantic. “In most cases, those patients die,” Alboursh said, highlighting the helplessness of healthcare providers in this crisis.Faced with a severe blockade claimed by Israel to be a lawful action linked to the hostage situation with Hamas, European officials and humanitarian organizations have condemned the siege as a violation of international law. They assert that the state of emergency created by this total blockade has plunged the afflicted population into a potential humanitarian disaster, with many residents in Gaza relying on charity kitchens for any food that may be available. The current crisis in Gaza compounds the already dire living conditions inflicted by a partial blockade that has been ongoing since Hamas seized control in 2007. The siege's impacts are evident: from preventable illnesses to children suffering from malnutrition, it encompasses every facet of daily life for the populace. Physicians, deprived of medical supplies, are left with questions they cannot answer. Without urgent intervention and lifting of the blockade, there are fears that many more lives will be lost.
