In brief

Surrey County Council has declared a major incident after two significant sinkholes opened up in a residential area, forcing the evacuation of around 30 homes. The first hole on Godstone High Street developed quickly, measuring 65 feet by 20 feet and 16 feet deep, while the second hole measures 16 feet by 16 feet and is also 16 feet deep. Geologists speculate that undisclosed geological conditions, possibly exacerbated by a burst water main and heavy rainfall, might have led to this collapse, indicative of broader issues with aging infrastructure. Fortunately, residents evacuated without injury, but some expressed concern about the stability of their homes and the extent of the damage.

As officials investigate the cause and stability of the sinkholes, local residents remain anxious about their future and the safety of their neighborhood.
