In brief

In a devastating turn of events, Typhoon Danas has made landfall in Taiwan, resulting in two fatalities and over 300 injuries, with significant disruptions reported nationwide.

Typhoon Danas battered Taiwan's southwestern coast on Sunday night, leading to a staggering nearly 400,000 households losing power by Monday morning. According to the Central Weather Administration, the typhoon made its entrance in Chiayi County, hitting with equivalent force to a Category 1 hurricane. The storm, which later transitioned to a tropical storm while moving towards mainland China, marked a historic event as it was the first typhoon to directly impact Chiayi County since detailed records began in 1958.In the aftermath of Typhoon Danas, widespread closures of schools and businesses were reported across numerous cities and counties. President Lai Ching-te addressed the nation, emphasizing the unusual path taken by the typhoon, which broadly affected Taiwan, resulting in strong winds and continuous rainfall.Sadly, the storm has been linked to two confirmed deaths. In Tainan, Taiwan’s oldest city, a 60-year-old man succumbed when a power outage disabled his breathing apparatus, while a 69-year-old man lost his life due to a tree falling on him. The full extent of injuries remains unclear as the government has not disclosed detailed reports. The National Fire Agency is on the ground to assess the situation and respond to the needs of those affected by this unexpected disaster.
