In brief

On Friday, a fire broke out at a luxury hotel construction site in Busan, quickly spiraling out of control and resulting in multiple casualties.

The tragic incident occurred around 10:50 a.m. local time at a Banyan Tree resort under construction in the southeastern port city of Busan. Fire officials reported that the blaze originated in the ground floor swimming pool area of the 12-story building, creating hazardous conditions for both workers and rescuers. Fire Chief Hong Moon-sik stated that dark, toxic smoke filled the area, complicating evacuation efforts. The six deceased individuals were found unconscious in the pool zone, reportedly due to insulation materials igniting and generating suffocating fumes. More than 120 fire trucks and hundreds of firefighters were dispatched, managing to control the fire by approximately 1:30 p.m. Locally based emergency personnel successfully rescued 14 individuals stranded on the building's roof. “The cause of the high number of casualties was that the fire had already spread by the time we arrived on the scene,” Chief Hong commented, noting that an investigation into the fire's origin is currently underway. The luxury hotel, expected to open this year, is owned by the Singapore-based Banyan Group, which has yet to issue a public response to the incident. As the investigation continues, this story remains developing.
